Jörg Spies was born in Saarbrücken on July 29, 1961. After completing his secondary education in 1976, he entered an apprenticeship program in automotive mechanics for commercial vehicles at MAN. After the training he worked in his chosen occupation in several locations, including in Munich and Koblenz. In 1984, he entered Daimler-Benz AG, where was active in various areas of production before moving to commercial vehicles development in 1986. In February 1995, he completed the master examination in automotive mechanics in Stuttgart. He was elected to the Works Council of the headquarters for the first time in 1998. Subsequently, he took over as Works Council Chairman in October 2005. Jörg Spies became member of IG Metall in 1983 and has been a member of the large collective bargaining commission of Baden–Württemberg since 1998. He has been active as member of the Central Works Council since 2002.Jörg Spies is also active as a lay judge at the labor court in Stuttgart.
