From 1996 to 1998 he was head of group controlling and IT systems at AVECO Holding AG, Frankfurt am Main, before moving in 1998 to Fraport AG, Frankfurt am Main to become senior vice president controlling, finance and accounting. He served as Senior Vice President of Fraport AG from 1998 to 2002, with power of procuration in Controlling, Finance, Accounting.

From 1993 to 1996, Hippe was a Research Assistant at the University of Mainz and a teaching assistant at the University of Mannheim. He serves as Scientific Assistant to the Chair for General Business Studies and Production Economics. He has been Vice Chairman of Roche Holdings, Inc. since April 1, 2011.
